WASHINGTON, D.C. — United States Representatives Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Annie Kuster (NH-02), Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18), and Lois Frankel (FL-21) led 172 members of Congress in introducing a House Resolution today that urgently responds to numerous reports of unnecessary medical procedures—including hysterectomies—being performed on immigrant women without their consent at the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Ga.

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) filed the Protect Older Job Applicants Act, which will codify and clarify protections for older job applicants in the current Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). Additionally, it will prohibit employers from asking for a job applicant's age or date of birth before the completion and submission of a job application.

WASHINGTON, DC – Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Tom Carper (D-DE), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) introduced the Wear Your Mask Act today, the Senate companion bill to Congresswoman Garcia's Wear Your Mask Act. This bill would require all people in federal buildings and facilities across the country – including post offices, Social Security offices, and the U.S. Capitol – to wear a face mask any time they are within six feet of another person.

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) had her Elder Abuse Protection Act of 2020 marked up by the House Judiciary Committee. This bill would direct the Attorney General to establish the Elder Justice Initiative within the Department of Justice Criminal Division. The Elder Justice Initiative would be responsible for coordinating criminal enforcement and public engagement efforts to combat elder abuse, neglect, and financial fraud and scams that target elders.
