HOUSTON, TX — Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement in response to today's Supreme Court hearing on the Republican Lawsuit to terminate the Affordable Care Act (ACA):

"For more than a decade, Republicans have repeatedly attempted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, yet they have failed every time. The ACA is a life-saving law that has expanded access to health care for millions of people in Texas and across the country."

"As a member of Congress, I have a responsibility to keep my constituents safe, especially now as we continue to combat the deadly COVID-19 virus. Ken Paxton, the indicted Attorney General of Texas, also has the same responsibility; instead, he is leading a coalition of Republican states trying the destroy the ACA. They couldn't win in Congress, so they are trying to win in the courts."

"This is just shameful. If Republicans are successful in gutting the ACA, 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions could lose their access to health care. In Texas alone, we have more than 1.7 million Texans who could become uninsured and nearly 12 million Texans with pre-existing conditions that could be impacted. As elected officials, we should be working to expand access to health care, not rip it away. I continue working with my Democratic colleagues in Congress to protect and expand the ACA because everyone should have access to health care, regardless of your income or pre-existing conditions."
