Seniors

In Congresswoman Garcia’s office it is all about the seniors. She cares deeply about protecting seniors in her community and ensuring all older Americans can retire with dignity. The Congresswoman fully understands how fundamental federal programs like Social Security and Medicare are to our nation. These programs represent one of America's best achievements and is a critical safety net for the vast majority of the country's seniors. She believes that we must do everything possible to ensure that this program stays intact, and she will continue to work with her colleagues to defend these hard-earned benefits for current and future generations.

As a former social worker, she has seen the first-hand struggles that seniors and people with disabilities experience in achieving financial stability. She has been a consistent advocate in protecting the rights of our elderly, and she continues to spread awareness about Social Security and Medicare scams that target our seniors and can jeopardize their long-term financial security.

Below is key legislation that the Congresswoman has worked on to ensure care for seniors in her community:

  • The Congresswoman voted in favor of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which was signed into law by President Biden in August 2022. Because of the Inflation Reduction Act, Medicare now limits seniors’ out-of-pocket prescription costs to $2,000 per year and seniors pay no more than $35 for insulin. This will save nearly 19 million seniors hundreds of dollars in prescription drugs costs every year. Because of the IRA, Medicare renegotiated the cost of ten commonly used prescription drugs to lower the costs for millions of Americans. Millions of Medicare Part D enrollees that depend on these treatments to treat life-threatening conditions including diabetes, heart failure, and cancer are expected to see lower out-of-pocket costs for these drugs.

  • In the 117th Congress, the Congresswoman introduced the Elder Abuse Protection Act of 2023 to protect older Americans from scams, fraud, and abuse.

The Congresswoman will keep fighting to make sure that older adults have access to the information they need to retire with dignity and live a good and healthy life during their retirement.
