HOUSTON, TX - Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) filed legislation that would provide minority-owned businesses $3 billion in grants through the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). It was included as a provision in The Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act, H.R. 6379, the coronavirus economic stimulus package unveiled earlier today by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. This provision would support the MBDA in fully implementing the Initiative to Build Growth Equity Funds for minority-owned businesses.

HOUSTON, TX - Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) and Congressman Lloyd Doggett (TX-35) led 15 House Democratic colleagues in urging House and Senate leadership to waive the two years waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries applying for Medicare. Individuals with disabilities face many barriers to health care and are often left out without affordable options.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the Supreme Court heard arguments on the June Medical Services v. Russo abortion access case. The case challenges a Louisiana law that requires doctors performing abortions to have hospital admitting privileges, almost identical to the Texas law that was struck down in 2016.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded nearly $11 million to BakerRipley for its Head Start Programs.

BakerRipley's Head Start and Early Head Start Programs provide comprehensive child development and familiy support services to low-income infants, toddlers, pre-school children and their families all across the greater Houston area.
