President Joe Biden, as expected, devoted a good deal of his State of the Union speech Tuesday night to Russia's attack on Ukraine and the international condemnation it has drawn. But he did include LGBTQ+ issues, along with much discussion of the economy, immigration, criminal justice, and more. But some are questioning whether his comment on trans youth went far enough.
A very special guest will virtually attend Democratic President Joe Biden's first State of the Union address on Tuesday night — trailblazing eight-year-old transgender activist Sunny Bryant.
Bryant, a third-grader from Houston, has repeatedly testified in front of Texas legislators in opposition to Republicans' transphobic policies. Her testimony has put her in touch with other trans kids looking to live freely in Texas and has also inspired teachers and administrators at her school to call their legislators and oppose the policies as well.
In remarks on the House floor Tuesday, Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) spoke about Texas Governor Greg Abbott's recent push to investigate medical treatment for transgender youth.
HOUSTON – The Department of Family and Protective Services is investigating three cases that go against Governor Greg Abbott's recent directive viewing gender-confirming care for kids as abuse.
"DFPS is aware of three intakes meeting the description in the AG opinion and Governor's directive. However, intakes may be physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, or medical neglect. We do not have a specific category for any other intake information," writes Melissa Lanford, Media Specialist at Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
Sunny Bryant can do tricks on her roller skates, crochet and play violin, and if she could be famous for something, she would like it to be for her jokes.
"Why was 6 afraid of 7?" she'll ask you. "Because 7 8 9."
But at least for now, the 8-year-old is better known as an utterly upbeat and outspoken advocate for equality and justice for transgender children like herself. She took multiple trips with her mother to Austin to address lawmakers during the repeatedly extended Texas legislative session.
According to Dershowitz, he stands behind his positions, reasoning, "I have a liberal liberal Republican voting record in politics, but I also practice civil libertarian values.".
