Houston, Texas – Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) observed Women's Equality Day by vowing to fight back against extreme MAGA Republicans who, after the recent Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, are now working to criminalize reproductive health care and ban birth control.

"While today is a celebration of freedom and equality, because of extreme MAGA Republicans' work to overturn Roe v. Wade, American women today sadly have less freedom than their mothers," said Congresswoman Garcia. "While extreme Republicans move to punish and control women, I promise to continue defending women's right to reproductive freedom. I trust women to make their own healthcare decisions. That is why I helped pass critical legislation to protect women's health and freedom."

In just the past two months, Congresswoman Garcia has helped pass:

  • The Women's Health Protection Act – voting for a second time on this strong legislation to make the protections of Roe v. Wade the law of the land once again. Not a single House Republican voted for this bill to respect the basic freedoms and the lives of women in every corner of the country.

  • The Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act – legislation stopping Republicans from criminalizing, fining, or suing women who exercise their constitutional right to travel across state lines to obtain an abortion. Nearly every House Republican voted against this life-saving legislation.

  • The Right to Contraception Act – legislation to guarantee the right to obtain and use birth control as established in Griswold, including oral contraception, emergency contraception, and IUDs. Nearly every House Republican voted that they don't believe women have a right to birth control.

In 1971, Women's Equality Day was established by Congress to commemorate the certification of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote back in 1920. The day also brings attention to the continuing efforts to secure equality for women throughout the United States.
