STATEMENT: Rep. Sylvia Garcia Called to Jury Duty and Encourages More Public Service

April 16, 2019

HOUSTON — Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia was called to jury duty today and released this statement:

"Public service isn't just about running for office or working to help run the government. Its purest forms are often found in our civic duties, such as voting, paying taxes, and yes, even jury duty," said Congresswoman Garcia. "I am proud to be summoned to jury selection with a panel of my peers today and be a part of a democratic system that calls its citizens to help enforce the law. It's a further reminder of the honor and privilege it is to be an American."

"We cannot underestimate the affect that public service has on our communities. Growing disinterest for public service in the United States has coincided with increasingly damaging national problems and political rhetoric. Serving allows our citizens to meet and build trust with people of starkly different backgrounds, education and income, and I truly believe more dedication to public service could cure many of our society's recent divisions."

Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2018, becoming the first Latina ever to represent Texas 29th Congressional district.
