Reps. Garcia, Moore, Scholten Introduce Resolution Recognizing Social Work Month and World Social Work Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representatives Sylvia Garcia (D-TX-29), Gwen Moore (D-WI-04), and Hillary Scholten (D-MI-03), introduced a resolution recognizing March as Social Work Month and March 17th as World Social Work Day, honoring the more than 728,000 social workers nationwide who support families and strengthen communities every day.
Social workers play a critical role in addressing mental health needs, supporting children and families, assisting seniors and veterans, and helping communities through crises. They are often on the front lines of challenges related to housing, education, health care, and economic stability, working to make sure no one is left behind.
“Social workers show up for people when they need it most. They help families stay together, support our kids in school, and make sure seniors and veterans are not left behind,” said Rep. Garcia. “I started my career as a social worker, and I saw firsthand how much of a difference they make in our communities every single day. That’s why I’m proud to introduce this resolution recognizing Social Work Month and World Social Work Day. We should not only thank social workers for what they do, but we should also make sure they have the support and resources to keep doing it. Stronger support for social workers means stronger families and strong communities.”
“Social workers serve our most vulnerable in society, helping those struggling with poverty, health issues, mental health challenges, and familial instability. They work passionately, often without adequate pay and with limited resources,” said Rep. Moore. “Through this resolution commemorating Social Work Month and World Social Work Day, we acknowledge their critical work in our communities.”
“I’m so proud to join my colleagues to honor the 728,000 social workers across our country, which includes more than 30,000 in Michigan," said Rep. Scholten. “As a former social worker myself, I know firsthand how truly invaluable these individuals are to their communities. They are champions for the families who need assistance the most, and make a difference every day in so many settings - hospitals, schools, nursing homes, child care facilities, correctional institutes, and many more. I’m grateful for social workers’ deep commitment to improving the lives of others, and I will continue being their strong advocate in Congress.”
Social workers are one of the largest providers of mental and behavioral health services in the country, helping individuals and families navigate challenges ranging from mental illness and substance use to housing instability and economic hardship. Social workers remain a critical part of the nation’s social safety net, particularly as communities face a rising need for mental health and support services, impacted by the growing affordability crisis.
Despite their essential role, the social work workforce continues to face shortages and rising demand, underscoring the need for stronger investment in recruitment, training, and retention. Congresswoman Garcia’s resolution highlights the importance of supporting social workers so they can continue serving individuals, families, and communities across the country.
