WASHINGTON, DC — Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 4th, 2019, the House Financial Services Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will hold a field hearing in Houston, TX, Chaired by Rep. Al Green. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia is grateful that the subcommittee, under Chairman Green's leadership, is looking into how discrimination continues to be a barrier for homeownership and consumer credit. House Democrats are committed to continuing to dismantle barriers that have historically kept certain communities from thriving.
Statement from Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia
"Harris County is one of the most diverse metropolitan areas in the country. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths; however, the legacy of discrimination has kept certain communities from succeeding," said Congresswoman Garcia.
"Racist practices such as redlining had lasting effects in areas where African Americans and Latinos lived and still live. Although redlining mostly does not occur any more, we are now seeing other developments such as gentrification that's pushing communities of color from their homes and neighborhoods.
My colleagues and I on the House Financial Services Committee are committed to making sure that we break down barriers that are keeping folks from building wealth through homeownership and acquiring consumer credit, particularly in communities that have been historically affected by discriminatory practices."
