Rep. Sylvia Garcia: We Must Pass the Dream and Promise Act

March 12, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Today Rep. Garcia (TX-29) joined Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), Nydia Velazquez (NY-7), and Yvette Clarke (NY-9) to introduce the Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6, as an original co-sponsor.

"For the last two years, the Trump Administration has failed Dreamers, TPS and DED recipients. The President has tried to deny their rights, block their applications, and deport them from this country. They should not have to live in legal limbo, caught in a political fight incited by this President," Rep. Garcia said. "That is why I am so proud to support the Dream and Promise Act.

Rep. Garcia continued, "We can change the lives of hundreds of thousands of Texas and US residents who are Americans in their hearts and have only known this country as their home. These Dreamers, TPS and DED recipients are essential to our communities and the economy. They're our neighbors, friends, and colleagues, and we have an obligation to create a pathway to citizenship for them. By passing this legislation, we can open the door of opportunity and give hundreds of thousands a chance to fulfill the promise of the American Dream."

The bill would create a pathway to citizenship for eligible Dreamers and secure permanent residency for those with TPS or DED status. It would also repeal outdated policies that penalize states for extending rights of residency to undocumented individuals. Finally, this legislation would provide legal protections for DACA, TPS, and DED recipients to prevent deportations and ensure the rights and dignity of all living under these designations.

The bill was introduced Tuesday and is expected to pass the House with overwhelming support.
