Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) Statement on Death of Migrant Teen in US Custody

April 16, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia released the following statement on yesterday's death of Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez, a 16 year-old Guatemalan migrant, in CBP custody.

"For those in our custody, the United States has no greater responsibility than the care of children and their families," said Congresswoman Garcia. "Yet, today, another child is dead. The fifth in six months under the Trump Administration's watch. Children are dying and families are being forever ripped apart because of President Trump's failed anti-immigrant policies. We must end the suffering now."

Congresswoman Garcia continued, "Continuing down this path is knowingly throwing away the lives and well-being of migrants. We must and will hold the Trump Administration accountable for these dangerous and reckless policies that are inhumane and wholly un-American."
