Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) Issues Statement in Response to Senate Parliamentarian Opinion on Immigration Reform in Build Back Better.

December 17, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) released the following statement in response to the opinion by the Senate Parliamentarian against the immigration reform provisions proposed in the Build Back Better Act:

"I am deeply disappointed by the Senate Parliamentarian's opinion which disregards the immense economic contributions of immigrants to communities across the country. Immigrants are essential workers, business owners, and taxpayers who contribute every day to their local communities. Immigration reform would allow them to contribute even more and live with stability and peace of mind to pursue their American Dream.

This fight is not over. I will keep fighting with my House and Senate colleagues for immigrants and for the millions of people who already call our country home. We must get this done."

The latest provisions proposed for the Build Back Better Act would extend work permits for immigrants and provide temporary protection against deportation for certain immigrants who came to the United States before January, 2011.
