Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia issues statement on the passing Frances “Sissy” Forenthold
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) issued a statement on the passing of women's rights champion and legendary former state legislator, Frances “Sissy” Forenthold:
“Sissy Farenthold was a trailblazer, an icon, and a friend. Women serving in elected office owe her a debt of gratitude. I am thankful to have called her a friend and ally, and to have witnessed her powerful advocacy and commitment to women's issues, peace, and justice. Sissy made a tremendous impact on Texas, the United States, and internationally as she made human rights across the globe her priority. You did not make it onto President Nixon’s ‘enemies list’ unless you made a real difference in the fight for a more just and equitable world. Sissy was always in the fight. She will be missed, but her legacy is all around us: from my female colleagues in Congress, to governors and senators, and to our Vice President.”
Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2018, becoming the first Latina ever to represent the Texas 29th Congressional District. She serves on the House Judiciary and Financial Services Committees.
