Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, U.S. House, Pass Historic Campaign Finance, Elections, and Ethics Reform Bill

March 8, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia joined more than 230 lawmakers to pass H.R. 1, the For The People Act, the largest elections and ethics overhaul in U.S. history.

"Today is truly a victory for the American people. Through this legislation, we will end the dominance of big money in politics and bring more transparency to our campaign finance system than ever before," Congresswoman Garcia said. "H.R. 1 will ensure government actually serves the people, not special interests, and protect every citizen's right to vote."

The measure is House Democrats' first major piece of legislation aimed at cleaning up rampant corruption within the federal government and returning everyday citizens' voices in our political system.

"Now, today, we are honoring the people's trust as we pass our transformative H.R. 1, the For The People [Act]," Speaker Pelosi said prior to the bill's passage. "H.R. 1 restores the people's faith that government works in the public's interest, the people's interest, not the special interests. That faith, that confidence is a treasure that is fundamental to a democracy – that people believe – they believe that the actions taken here will be in their interest.

The U.S. Senate will take up its own version of the bill next week.
