Washington D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia commended the Port of Houston, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Project 11 partners for their significant work on the Houston Ship Channel expansion.
"The Houston Ship Channel is essential to Houston's vibrant economy and workforce," said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia. "Through this strategic collaboration, $1,000,000,000 in critical funds were raised through Federal, local, and private partnerships to ensure the port remains the Nation's leader in total tonnage."
"The expansion work led by the Port of Houston, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Project 11 will ensure the ship channel's economic impact can be felt across the United States for decades to come," said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia.
The Houston Ship Channel sustains 1,000,000+ jobs in Texas alone while maintaining 3,200,000 jobs across the United States. Additionally, 75% of the jobs created by the Houston Ship Channel are in disadvantaged communities — providing economic opportunity to minorities, underrepresented groups, and traditionally marginalized communities.
