WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (D-TX-29) released the following statement on her vote against the Trump administration's rescissions package, which claws back Congressionally-approved funding for public media and foreign aid:

“Tonight, House Republicans voted to rubber-stamp Trump's efforts to claw back billions in already Congressionally-approved federal funds. They voted to erode the sole authority of Congress to approve federal funding, all to bend the knee to the Felon in the White House.

"Most Americans don’t view the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as a political organization. They see it as the agency that provides food overseas with the U.S. logo stamped on the side—pallets that keep villages alive, feed hungry children, and keep young girls from being sold into slavery to pay for basic needs.

"Most Americans don’t see NPR or PBS as radical. They see the local station where their kids watch Sesame Street and learn important lessons about reading, empathy, and kindness. The one where they also tune in for trusted news or to know how to stay safe during a hurricane or other natural disasters.

"American greatness isn’t just measured by the size of our military or the praise of our president. It’s measured by how we treat people in need, how we protect and educate our children, and how we defend democracy both at home and abroad. Tonight, Republicans risk undermining that greatness for generations."
