Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia's Statement on Vote Against Republicans' Big Ugly Bill
WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (D-TX-29) issued the following statement following her vote against Republicans' Big Ugly Bill:
“Today, House Republicans chose billionaires over our nation’s working families, seniors, veterans, and children.
"Trump’s Big Ugly Bill is one of the most devastating attacks on Americans in our history. It will rip health care from 17 million people by gutting Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. In Texas alone, 1.6 million people could lose coverage, and hospitals and nursing homes will be forced to close.
"It’s also the biggest assault ever on food assistance, slashing SNAP so deeply that millions — including kids, seniors, and veterans — will be pushed closer to hunger. In Texas, where one in five children already goes hungry, that’s unconscionable.
"And for what? All this cruelty just to give nearly a trillion dollars in tax breaks to billionaires, while exploding the national debt by $4 trillion.
"I voted NO on this bill, and I will keep fighting to protect health care, keep food on the table, and defend the dignity of my constituents and every person in Texas and across our country.”
