Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement in response to Governor Greg Abbott's troubling directive which targets Texas' Transgender community.

"My heart goes out to the Trans community and their families across Texas. I am deeply troubled by the directive Governor Abbott issued last week. It cruelly targets young transgender people and their loved ones. Abbott's orders to treat gender-affirming health care as "child abuse", not only goes against the opinions of medical professionals, but it is also unconscionable."

"Abbott's orders to investigate our youth and their families for being trans or being supportive of a trans child is not only wrong but terrifying for residents across Texas. This measure pits Texans against one another and subjects the Trans community, which already faces high rates of violence and stigmatization, to further persecution."

"No one should have to live in fear of being who they are in our great nation. I urge Governor Abbott to reconsider this anti-trans measure for the well-being of the Transgender community and Texans across the state."
