HOUSTON, TX – Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement in response to Mexican President López Obrador's visit yesterday to the White House:

"Last week, I joined my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in urging President Trump not to move forward with yesterday's meeting with Mexican President López Obrador on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)."

"Yesterday's meeting, while ostensibly about USCMA, was an attempt by the Trump administration to politicize the U.S.-Mexico relationship and deflect from its own failings in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Without Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, the meeting was nothing more than another White House photo op."

"For years, President Trump has insulted Mexican Americans and enacted cruel immigration policies that have hurt thousands of immigrant families across the country and at the U.S.-Mexico border. It was therefore disappointing to see reports that President López Obrador did not push President Trump for change."

"This is personal for me because even though my district benefits greatly from our trade partnership with Mexico and Canada, it is also nearly 80% Latino. My community has been greatly affected by this administration's anti-immigrant policies. If we hope to truly strengthen our bilateral relationship with Mexico, we cannot continue to ignore this issue like it was at yesterday's meeting."
