Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Issues Statement on Today’s Supreme Court Decision to Uphold Restrictive Arizona Voting Laws in Test of the Voting Rights Act

July 1, 2021

Washington D.C. — Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement in response to today's Supreme Court decision to uphold restrictive Arizona voting laws in test of the Voting Rights Act:

"The Supreme Court's duty is to protect the Constitution and our democracy. Today's wrongful decision comes amid a continuous right-wing onslaught against free and fair elections and reflects that citizens of every race will not have equal voting opportunities."

"I have said this time and time again—the number of voting restrictions GOP-led state legislatures are enacting, and the extreme gerrymandering being plotted by partisan political operators—is seriously concerning. The Supreme Court's decision is yet another, in a series of blows, chipping away at the Voting Rights Act."

"As a Member of Congress, I have a responsibility to protect our democracy and racial equality by making sure all Americans can vote, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, income, disability, party affiliation or English proficiency. We should be making it easier for people to vote, not harder. We should be strengthening our democracy, not undermining it for political gain."

"Congress must take swift action by passing the long-overdue For The People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure no one is left behind and that the vote of every American is respected."
