HOUSTON, TX – Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement in response to the protests and riots in the Houston region and across America in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder.
"America was shaken to its core by George Floyd's horrific murder, as his life slowly left his body as a Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into his neck for nearly nine minutes," said Congresswoman Garcia. "This is a painful reminder that we still have too much work to do in putting an end to racism, white supremacy, and police brutality in America."
"I stand shoulder to shoulder with all Americans who demand justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and all the black men and women who have been killed by the police. I also condemn individuals who are taking advantage of this moment to loot, vandalize, and incite violence in our cities. We must protest peacefully, focused on the cause we are fighting for – freedom, opportunity, and justice for all – and resist the chaos resulting from the violence. I stand with my black brothers and sisters and won't stop fighting alongside you until justice is guaranteed for all black Americans," concluded Congresswoman Garcia.
