HOUSTON, TX – Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement in response to the House Armed Services and Oversight and Reform Subcommittees opening an investigation into recent service member deaths at Fort Hood:

"I applaud Congresswoman Jackie Speier, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Armed Services' Subcommittee on Military Personnel, and Congressman Stephen Lynch, the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform's Subcommittee on National Security, for taking this critical step in guaranteeing justice for Vanessa Guillén, and all the soldiers who have been failed by Fort Hood and the Army."

"This investigation is a meaningful continuation of the oversight and investigative work Congresswoman Speier and I have been doing on the Vanessa Guillén case, and I am hopeful that its findings will better equip Congress to reform how the military handles allegations of sexual assault and harassment, as well as missing soldier cases. It is clear there is something wrong happening at Fort Hood, and we must make sure that not one more soldier is put in harm's way. That is why later this month, I will be joining Congresswoman Speier on a congressional delegation trip to Fort Hood as part of our ongoing investigative efforts. Congress takes this seriously. We will secure justice for Vanessa Guillén and for every soldier who has been failed by Fort Hood and the Army."
