Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Announces Appropriations Minibus #1 Funding Wins

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) announced the inclusion of funding she championed in the House-passed Appropriations Minibus #1 package. The funding requests included in this Appropriations Minibus #1 package:

Agriculture-Rural Development - FDA

  • $68.277 billion in mandatory funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • $552 million for the Summer Food Service Program
  • $50 million for the Summer EBT program
  • $15 million for school breakfast expansion grants
  • $390.7 million for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program

"I'm proud to see so many of my priorities reflected in this most recent appropriations package. Many of these priorities will benefit my constituents in the Houston region. In particular, the economic empowerment programs will help make sure our youngest and most vulnerable Texans have access to critical, life-saving nutrition and anti-hunger programs, especially during this ongoing pandemic," said the Congresswoman Garcia.

Interior and Environment:

  • $170 million for the National Endowment for the Humanities
  • $170 million for the National Endowment for the Arts
  • $22 million for competitive grants to preserve the sites and stories of underrepresented community civil rights

Congresswoman Garcia added that "Many non-profits in my district will have access to funds through the grant programs authorized in this appropriations package to provide high quality educational services to Houstonians. As our region continues to adapt to distance learning due to COVID-19, the Interior and Environment priotities will further help in these efforts."

Additionally, Congresswoman Garcia sought the following funding to support diplomatic priorities abroad:

State, Foreign Operations

  • $800 million for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria
  • $750 million for International Family Planning and Reproductive Health Programs
  • $975 million for international education
  • $7.83 billion for humanitarian assistance under the Migration & Refugee Assistance (MRA), U.S. Emergency Refugee & Migration Assistance (ERMA), and International Disaster Assistance (IDA) accounts

Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2018, becoming the first Latina ever to represent Texas 29th Congressional district.
