"The attack on the Capitol at the hands of violent insurrectionists was a deeply traumatic experience that I think about often," said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia. "I was on the House floor when the building was stormed. Many members, including myself, did not know if we would make it home that day. I'm forever grateful to the brave police officers who defended America's democracy, and today we honor the five police officers who lost their lives and the more than 140 who were injured defending our democracy. Sadly, the bipartisan January 6 Select Committee confirmed former President Trump and his close associates indeed engaged in insurrection following a diligent investigation. They must be held accountable to ensure this never happens again. That's how we can properly honor these police officers and protect the peaceful transition of power. "

Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2018, becoming the first Latina ever to represent the Texas 29th Congressional District. She serves on the House Judiciary, Financial Services, and Armed Services Committees
