Houston, Texas – Recently, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) led both Congressman Al Green and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee in sending a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) urging an investigation into a racist and divisive election mailer sent to Houston residents recently.

"I'm deeply troubled by this racially charged election mailer many of my constituents received mere days before the election," said Congresswoman Garcia. This mailer was sent by an unnamed group, and it was clearly intended to pit minority voters against one another for political gain. There's no place for racist and divisive campaign tactics in Houston and our region. I call on the DOJ to conduct a full investigation into this mailer and its anonymous sender for potential violations of federal law."

Congresswoman Garcia and her colleagues also strongly requested that the DOJ's Civil Rights Division assign election monitors to Harris County to ensure election integrity. This additional request was a follow up to a letter sent on Friday, October 28, 2022. This would help slow the spread of disinformation, would curb voter intimidation, and increase election transparency.
