Washington DC – Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia introduced a House Resolution to recognize Dolores Huerta, a legendary labor leader, and women's rights advocate. The resolution seeks to designate April 10th as Dolores Huerta Day, a federal holiday in her honor, which would showcase the accomplishments of one of the country's most distinguished activists.
"Dolores Huerta has been a pioneering figure in the fight for social justice, particularly regarding workers' and women's rights," said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia. "She has faced physical violence and threats but remained resolute in her vision to organize farmworkers and advance equal rights for all. Dolores Huerta is an exceptional national hero who has improved the lives of millions of workers and women nationwide and should be recognized for her contributions to American society."
"I'm honored to be able to use this day as a way to remind everyone the only way we're going to be able to save our democracy is through education and action. Today we honor those who have come before us and who have helped pave the way for the [civil] rights we have today. My hope is that people take this day to educate themselves on all the civil rights movements that have come before our time and participate in civic advocacy for themselves and their communities. Democracy, like love, is expressed through action, and the only way to save our democracy is to act," said the Dolores Huerta Foundation.
Dolores Huerta continues to serve the community through her advocacy work. She founded the Dolores Huerta Foundation in 2002 and currently serves as its President. The foundation aims to further Dolores Huerta's life's work through grassroots advocacy and voter engagement. Currently, there are state-level Dolores Huerta Days in Washington and California and a federal holiday designation for her labor leader counterpart, César Chávez, but no federal holiday designation for Dolores Huerta. This resolution seeks to change that.
The resolution is endorsed by: Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs, Dolores Huerta Foundation, Farmworker Justice, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), UnidosUS, and United Farm Workers.
