On the Heels of Speaker Pelosi’s Care Economy Week of Action, Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia Will Meet with Labor Leaders on the Importance of Investing in the Care Economy for Our Workers.

June 14, 2021

Washington D.C. – This week, Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) will meet with local labor leaders and constituents from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in Texas and the National Domestic Workers Alliance to recognize Domestic Workers Day.

During the meeting, the Congresswoman will hear from workers about their experiences of balancing work and child care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"During the pandemic, nearly three million mothers around the country left the workforce because of the lack of access to care for their loved ones. These issues are not new; the pandemic just amplified them. The costs of care have only gone up, leaving many families and working moms struggling to access affordable care centers," said Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29). "This is even more evident in a district like mine where working families can't afford to miss work because they don't count on the working conditions that allow them to access paid leave. We need to make sure we continue working to improve access to care for all. Investing in our care economy is investing in the future of our workers, mothers, families, and kids."
