WASHINGTON, D.C. – In January, Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) wrote to the eight school district Superintendents in her Congressional district asking them to remove all lead pipes, or provide lead-filtration hydration systems, in their respective school district facilities, using recently-passed funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), as well as the American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds.

"Parents should not have to worry about their children having access to clean and safe drinking water in our schools," said Congresswoman Garcia. "Science doesn't lie – any amount of lead is unsafe for children to consume. I am proud the infrastructure law has funding provisions for lead pipe remediation to clean our nation's water and improve our school infrastructure."

Congresswoman Garcia added that, "President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have outlined a plan to remove all the lead pipes across our country in the next decade. The IIJA funds are included in that plan, and our school leaders must do everything possible to prevent lead-contaminated water from being consumed by our nation's children."

Congresswoman Garcia's request was sent to the Superintendents of Houston ISD, Aldine ISD, Pasadena ISD, Sheldon ISD, Humble ISD, Channelview ISD, Galena Park ISD, and Deer Park ISD.

The letter to Houston Independent School District (HISD) Superintendent House, was also signed by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18).
