HOUSTON, T.X. – Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (D-TX-29) released the following statement following Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims that recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) are not protected from deportations:
“Before Donald Trump was inaugurated earlier this year, he said he wanted to do something to protect Dreamers. Instead he is breaking our nation’s promise to a group of people who are American in every way but on paper. DACA recipients were brought here as kids, on average, at just six years old. Six-year-olds don’t break laws. But under DACA, they’ve followed the rules, gone to school, served our country, and fueled our economy.
"Now, Trump wants to deport them. It’s just short-sighted, cruel, and cowardly. Americans support Dreamers because Dreamers support America. We’re going to fight this—and we need all Democrats and Republicans to come together in finally making my bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act the law of the land. It is time to help unleash the full potential of all Dreamers in America by providing them with the permanent legal protections and pathway to citizenship they have rightfully earned.”
