WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Sylia Garcia (TX-29) announced that Harris County, Texas, will receive over $9.6 million in federal funding through the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-Saving Transportation (PROTECT) Discretionary Grant Program. These funds were made available through the Inflation Reduction Act's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which Congresswoman Garcia proudly voted for in August 2022. This grant will be used for the Harris County Road Drainage Master Plan project to create a master plan that will evaluate drainage infrastructure and tackle issues with local roadways in unincorporated areas of the county.

“I’m proud to announce over $9.6 million in federal funding that will give communities like ours here in Harris County a chance to rebuild and strengthen our infrastructure. Investing in our most overlooked populations provides families and children with a safe place to thrive. What we are doing here will transform the lives of thousands of people and lay the groundwork for a brighter, more resilient future for all of our communities,” said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia.

Harris County has experienced six federally declared flooding disasters since 2015, which have left an already vulnerable area with infrastructure in need of critical investments. The Master Plan targets unincorporated parts of the county where roads and land development have intensified in recent decades and where, in anticipation of expected future growth, proactive mitigation action is relatively affordable. Harris County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation, and this grant will provide the community with the funds to establish efficient drainage and modernize our roads.
