Washington D.C. – Recently, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) introduced H.Res. 1056, which designates April 10 as Dolores Huerta Day in recognition of legendary labor leader and women's rights advocate, Dolores Huerta. This bill creates a federal day in her honorthat properly highlights the accomplishments of one of our country's most distinguished activists.
"Dolores Huerta is an incredible labor leader who served at the forefront of both workers' and women's rights throughout history," said Congresswoman Garcia. "She has dedicated her entire life to fighting for social justice. Enduring threats and physical violence, Dolores' unwavering vision to organize farmworkers and advance equal rights for all remained unscathed. She's an exceptional national hero who improved the lives of millions of workers and women across the Nation. Dolores' legacy calls for a federal day in her honor."
Dolores Huerta continues serving the community through advocacy to this day. In 2002, she founded the Dolores Huerta Foundation, where she currently serves as President. As the foundation's leader, she continues her work through local grassroots advocacy and voter engagement. Currently, there are state-level Dolores Huerta Days in Washington and California. There is also a federal designation for her labor leader counterpart, César Chávez. Designating April 10 as Dolores Huerta Day would highlight the life and legacy of this powerful minority woman.
