WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the Supreme Court heard arguments on the June Medical Services v. Russo abortion access case. The case challenges a Louisiana law that requires doctors performing abortions to have hospital admitting privileges, almost identical to the Texas law that was struck down in 2016.

"Under this Administration we have seen constant attacks on our healthcare and reproductive rights. I stood with advocates outside the Supreme Court to make it clear that all Americans should have the right to make their own decisions about their bodies," said Congresswoman Garcia.

The 2016 Texas law mandating abortion providers have hospital admitting privileges was stuck down, but this is the first time the Supreme Court will take up an abortion case since Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch were confirmed to the court. If the Louisiana admitting privileges law is upheld, all but one abortion providers in the state will be forced to close.

If the case, likely to be decided in June 2020, is ruled against abortion rights it has the potential to set a dangerous precedent and change the type and scope of abortion restrictions across the country.

"Abortion is healthcare. We must stand up against those who try to take our rights away with needless restrictions that will ony make us less safe," concluded Congresswoman Garcia.
