Pro-Choice Latina Group Adopts New Political Strategy
What to do when our reproductive rights are under attack on all fronts? For Poder PAC, a group dedicated to supporting Democratic Latinas running for office, the solution is one: change the strategy.
The group has launched its five-figure "Poderosas 2022 Protection Program" to support pro-abortion Latina candidates.
"With reproductive rights under attack, it's imperative we re-elect all of our pro-choice Democratic Latinas in Congress – including our first and only Latina U.S. senator," said Poder PAC Board Chair Ingrid Duran in a statement.
As The Hill reported, since 2008, Poder PAC has supported Latina candidates in state, local, and federal elections, but this campaign is its first incumbent protection program.
In addition to investing in campaigns, Poder PAC's strategy is focused on helping candidates raise money and connect with voters.
Its slate of candidates announced last week includes Nevada Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, the first Latina elected to the Senate and one of the Republicans' top targets this year.
The list also consists of nine members of the House of Representatives, including Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (D).
Along with Cortez Masto and Leger Fernandez, the 2022 incumbent protection list includes California Democratic Reps. Norma Torres and Nanette Barragan, Texas Democratic Reps. Verónica Escobar and Sylvia García and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), all of whom are supported by Poder PAC as challengers.
